Where in the World is Wälden?

In a prior post, I found that Johann Huber, father of Laurenz Huber who married in 1751, lived in Wälden.[1]

I checked Meyers Gazetteer to find out more about this location. While there is an entry in Meyers for Wälden, there is no associated map that shows its location. Meyers shows Wälden is associated with Ödsbach. The map for Ödsbach on Meyers does not show Wälden.

The Landesarchiv [State Archive] Baden-Württemberg website has a beautiful collection of 1:10000 maps in color. I looked at the one for Ödsbach and it did not show Wälden. I noticed that Giedensbach was on the border of Ödsbach, so I pulled up that map. And there in the middle of the map was Wälden. Just north of it was Gnadhof, which was another area I had seen associated with the Hubers. I’ll talk more about that in a later post.

The dark green color indicates it is a forested area. Incidentally, Wälden translates to “forests” in English.

You never know what might be available on state archive websites. When one map does not give the answers you need, look for other ones.
