Lawrence Huber’s Paternal Great Grandparents

In this post I’ll continue to reveal Lawrence Huber’s ancestry in Butschbach and surrounding areas. At least for now, I will follow Lawrence’s paternal ancestry. The records of the Catholic church in Oberkirch, which was attended by residents of Butschbach and Giedensbach, go back to 1647. Given that Lawrence was born in 1817, it might be possible to trace his ancestry about five generations back. That is based on an average of about thirty years from the birth of one generation to the next.

Lawrence Huber’s paternal grandparents were Joseph and Anna Maria (Heizmann) Huber. From their 1774 marriage record, we know that Joseph’s father’s name was Laurenz.[1] This is where the research can get tricky, with many common names within a small area. I do not know Joseph’s mother’s name and I have not found a death record for Joseph, which might give me his age. I can guess he was at least twenty years old when he married. I will need to make sure there is only one father named Laurenz with a child named Joseph within a reasonable time.

The best candidate for Joseph is the infant baptized 12 January 1751. His parents were Laurenz Huber and Catharina Heptich who lived in Giedensbach.[2]

Laurenz and Catharina married 20 April 1750 in Oberkirch. He was the son of Johann Huber who lived in Welden before his death. Catharina’s father was also named Johann and he lived in Giedensbach before his death. The bridal pair and their witnesses all signed with their mark.[3]

I have not found Welden (likely Wälden) on a map. It is near Ödsbach, according to Meyers.[4]

At this point, we have taken Lawrence Huber’s ancestry back four generations. We have records available that might take us back another one hundred years!

This is only the male side of Lawrence’s family. So much more is available to be discovered!
